It's January, the perfect time to establish our New Year's resolutions and break them. This year I am trying a new approach. I amreverse engineering my year, using this writing exercise to determine what accomplishments will be most important to me at the end of the year.
Begin by allowing your mind to drift into the future. However it is that you visualize best (for me, it's to sit cross legged on a pillow and let my mind drift for 10-15 minutes), place yourself in your own shoes, but 12 months down the road. The ball is dropping on 2014, you are somewhere you really want to be, feeling very good about the year. You've done many things, accomplished many tangible goals. You are looking back, reflecting on all that you've done this year and can't help but smile. Why is that? What are you so proud of?
Begin writing....
Lay it all on the table. This is your year - shape it however you want! If you're stuck or want more ideas on how to brainstorm your year in retrospect, check out the result of my personal writing exercise below.
So what did I do? I put firmly in stone two goals for the past year that brought me to this amazing party and this room full of the people I love, and who love me very dearly. Those two goals?

The Example: Noah's Year of Financial Freedom and Creative Publication
It's the evening of December 31, 2014 and I'm back in Minneapolis in a gorgeous ballroom that we rented for our friends and family to celebrate an unexpectedly successful year. What made it so good? How could I afford this massive fiesta? In short, it was my year of financial freedom.
As Drake said,
Yeah, I swear shit just started clicking dog.It was those last couple months of 2013. my life just started making sense. I was comfortable in my body, I realized my endless potential, I saw that I could do anything, anything, I put my mind to. I was no longer walking through the world, experiencing what came at me. No. I realized the world was forming before my eyes, and that it took on the shapes that I desire. It was my turn, and excuse my language, but I wasn't going to fuck around.
You know it's real when you are who you think you are.
So what did I do? I put firmly in stone two goals for the past year that brought me to this amazing party and this room full of the people I love, and who love me very dearly. Those two goals?
- Financial Freedom
- Creative Publication
I attribute a great part of my financial freedom to the success of the company I started with Tony Civello back in 2013, Epical. It began as a wildly popular discount engine for summer activities in Jackson Hole (Epical JH), and branched into a massive tree that provided fruit for those who sought out its shade. I can't take much of the credit for the success of the company - it is composed of a number of amazing individuals who, likewise, poured their souls into a project they believed in and had a strong desire to add value to the world around them. It is no surprise that those same individuals also found financial freedom this year, and for those that could make it, I'd like to raise a toast! You all very much deserve every penny you earned this year and every accomplishment that you pushed out into the world. I would not be here today if it wasn't for you.
As for my creative publication, it wasn't easy at first. I had to learn how to put my nose to the grindstone and crank out the imagination that lived within the walls of my mind. I learned to lower my defenses and write from the heart, pouring onto paper the very souls that would become my characters. As those characters took shape, and their stories became more real than many lives actually lived, it was no surprise that others were interested in hearing them. I shared these stories with loyal colleagues from my university days, and with their guidance and aid, perfected the language and the picture that unfolded through words to a point that, not surprisingly, quickly peaked the interest of a couple of big names in the publishing business.

I think it is unfair to say that these stories were written by one person - they were each written by a couple dozen individuals who all poured themselves into the story and championed them to the forefront of the social consciousness. I would almost prefer that the "author" credit for any one of my stories be The Ark to indicate that it was an entire group of individuals, all allied in an otherwise impossible journey, that carried the stories into the world. Together. No great feat was ever accomplished by one man. No matter what it looks like years later, there was always an army of individuals helping her along the way. We come into this world by the grace of others, and we shape it just the same.
I am eternally grateful that you all could make it tonight. As I learned through my post-college wanderings, material possessions hold very little value next to the people in your life. And because of you, no matter how few clothes I had in my pack or dollars in my account, I always felt that I was the wealthiest person in the world. A few of you will likely remember last year's holiday celebrations. You poked fun at me for wearing the same sweater for 4 of our social outings. I didn't tell you at the time, but I already had everything I could possibly want. The last thing on my mind was my sweater. I had you. I had everything.
Have a good night, enjoy yourselves, and if you haven't found me milling about, come give me a hug. If you don't know me yet, there's no easier time to meet me than right now. I honestly cannot get too may hugs in my life. Peace and love everyone! I love and appreciate you all very much.

This is finally real. I am precisely who I think I am. :)
